What happens when a loved one can no longer be independent at home, or they need to move to a care facility? 
They are fearful of and uncomfortable with major changes.  They grieve the loss of their independence and their familiar life routines.  They face major lifestyle changes.  If they are faced with moving into a care facility, there are added challenges....foreign surroundings, new and different routines, and strangers all around them.  Activities they used to do independently now require help, such as shopping errands, entertainment, correspondence, medical visits and simple companionship. They are often lonely in their new surroundings and look to the familiarity of family members to create their quality of life. They often believe that they become powerless in their ability to control of the quality of their own lives, and this often creates attempts to control other family members, damaging family relationships. 

 And what happens to family members during this time? They are faced with the enormous challenge of helping their loved one mentally, emotionally and physically transition into a live that is dependent on others. They are forced to enter a new role as caregiver.  It becomes emotional and stressful to juggle the added demands of mom or dad or grandma while trying to maintain an already full life of their own. Resentment and guilt often show up as anger over the smallest things. The increased stress can decrease the quality of health, life, and even the relationships of all concerned.
